FILM CRITIQUE
(Besides Osmosis Jones, this is my favorite movie ever.)
Epic was really touching, ok.
Really touching. This is the second movie we've watched since exams that has made me want to sob. Ronin was actually Tom Imura, who is my favorite book character ever.
The main subjects it covered were biology, like plants and stuff, and el problemos de la famila.
The plot was basically this chick, MK, who's too cool for school and doesn't like to chill with her lame-o daddio. Of course, that's to be expected, since he sort of comes off as an obsessive loon. I probably would've thought he was crazy too (especially considering his occupation sort of drove her mom away.)
I think the biggest problem regarding that was that MK had this idea that her father valued his job over her, which, as we could see at the end (when he was trashing all his life's work because he thought his daughter was gone), was definitely not true.
The reoccurring theme here was sort of sticking together. Like the tree and leaf analogy that was constantly repeated, the whole deal with the little leaf boy and Ronin (as far as him not wanting to be a leafman and whatnot) and the situation with MK and her father, I definitely think that the purpose of this film was to convey that message.
So, all in all, that was the theme. Gotta stick with the people that love you, and stick to the things you believe in.
I thought the movie was really good from the very beginning. It was funny, and all the acting was done really well, and the animation. BOY HOWDY the animation. You could see every twitch and flinch and emotion and wowza that's all I could focus on for the whole movie. There was, of course, symbolism, and the idea that this all sort of had a bigger meaning (since leaf people probably don't actually exist). Dynamic character development amongst pretty much everyone, Ronin and being less uptight, little leaf boy and being more uptight, and MK getting her stuff straight with her dad. Still, funny, and family friendly, so yeah. Why wouldn't a kid like it?
Except maybe the little rat people.
I can't pick out TOO many weaknesses in this film, because I just loved it so much, but like most children's movies, it was pretty cliche. As far as the message and stuff goes. As for strengths, everything (animation and acting and humor oh my) (not to mention it was super sweet) (yes, that too), and that is all.
Rachel out.
